Embolisationsmaterial, also known as embolization materials, refers to substances used in medical procedures to intentionally block blood vessels. These materials are primarily employed in interventional radiology and neurosurgery to treat vascular abnormalities such as arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), aneurysms, tumors, and other conditions where blood flow must be selectively interrupted. The goal is to cut off the blood supply to a targeted area without affecting normal circulation elsewhere in the body.

Embolization materials come in various forms, including liquid agents, coils, beads, and foams. Liquid embolics, such as glue (e.g., N-butyl cyanoacrylate) and ethanol, are injected directly into the vessel to occlude it. Metallic coils, often made of platinum or stainless steel, are deployed within aneurysms or vascular malformations to promote clotting. Microspheres, typically made of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) or other polymers, are injected to block smaller vessels. Foam embolics, such as liquid embolic agents mixed with air or gas, are used for selective occlusion in certain procedures.

The choice of embolization material depends on factors like the size and location of the targeted vessel, the clinical indication, and the desired duration of occlusion. Complications can occur, including vessel rupture, migration of the material, or unintended occlusion of healthy vessels, which is why these procedures are performed under fluoroscopic guidance by trained interventional radiologists or neurosurgeons.

Embolization is a minimally invasive alternative to traditional surgery, offering reduced risks of infection, shorter recovery times, and fewer complications. It is widely used in the treatment of liver tumors, uterine fibroids, and cerebral aneurysms, among other conditions. Advances in technology continue to improve the safety and efficacy of embolization materials, expanding their applications in medical practice.
