Emboliaaineita

Emboliaaineita are substances used in a medical procedure called embolization. Embolization is a minimally invasive interventional radiology technique used to intentionally block blood vessels. This blockage can be performed for various reasons, such as stopping bleeding, reducing blood supply to tumors, or treating arteriovenous malformations.

The embolizing agents used are diverse and chosen based on the specific clinical application. Common types include particulate agents, which are tiny particles of materials like polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) or microspheres made from gelatin or calcium alginate. These particles are injected into the target vessel, where they lodge and occlude it. Another category includes coils, which are small, metallic devices, often made of platinum or stainless steel. These coils are deployed into the vessel and expand to create a scaffold that promotes clot formation and vessel blockage. Liquid agents, such as cyanoacrylate glue, are also used. This glue polymerizes upon contact with blood, solidifying and sealing the vessel.

The choice of emboliaaine depends on factors like the size and type of the blood vessel to be occluded, the desired duration of occlusion (temporary or permanent), and the underlying medical condition being treated. Embolization procedures are performed by interventional radiologists and carry potential risks, which are discussed with the patient before the procedure.
