Emboliaaine is a term used in medicine to describe a substance that can cause an embolism. An embolism occurs when a blockage, known as an embolus, travels through the bloodstream and lodges in a blood vessel, obstructing blood flow. This embolus can be composed of various materials, and the term "emboliaaine" broadly refers to anything that can form such an obstruction.

Common types of emboli include blood clots (thrombi), which are the most frequent cause. Other emboliaaine can include pieces of plaque that have broken off from artery walls (atheroemboli), fat droplets that enter the bloodstream, typically after a fracture or surgery, and air bubbles, which can occur during medical procedures or trauma. Less commonly, foreign bodies, such as fragments of medical devices or even tumor cells, can also act as emboliaaine.

The consequences of an embolism depend on the location and size of the blockage. For instance, a pulmonary embolism occurs when an embolus blocks an artery in the lungs, while a cerebrovascular accident (stroke) results from an embolism in the brain. The medical management of embolism involves identifying the underlying cause and preventing further embolization. Treatment strategies may include anticoagulation therapy to prevent clot formation or surgical removal of the embolus.
