Eläkeavustukset

Eläkeavustukset, often translated as pension supplements or pension assistance, are financial support measures in Finland designed to help individuals with low pensions. These supplements aim to ensure a basic standard of living for pensioners who may not have accumulated sufficient pension entitlements to cover their essential expenses.

The primary form of eläkeavustus is the guaranteed pension, or takuueläke, which is paid to those who have resided in Finland for a significant period but whose earnings-related pension and other pension income are very low. This guaranteed pension is a national pension that ensures a minimum income level.

Another related concept is the housing allowance for pensioners, or eläkkeensaajan asumistuki. While not strictly an "eläkeavustus," it serves a similar purpose by providing financial assistance for housing costs to low-income pensioners. This allowance is income-tested and considers the size and cost of the pensioner's housing.

Eligibility for these benefits is typically determined by factors such as the amount of pension received, other income, and residency status. The Finnish Social Insurance Institution, Kela, is responsible for administering and paying these supplements and allowances. The purpose of eläkeavustukset is to provide a safety net, ensuring that all pensioners can meet their basic needs, particularly in retirement.
