Elvemunninger is the term used in Scandinavian languages to refer to the mouths of rivers, where freshwater discharges into the sea or into a large estuary. In English, the concept is commonly described as river mouths and encompasses estuaries, deltas, tidal channels, and other coastal forms created by the interaction of fluvial and marine processes. The word combines elements meaning river with those meaning mouth.

Formation and morphology are driven by the balance of sediment transport, tidal energy, and wave action. Rivers deposit sediment at their outlets, building deltas or sandbars that can alter flow direction. Tidal currents mix freshwater and seawater, producing brackish environments and gradients in salinity, temperature, and nutrients.
