Elternknotens

Elternknoten is a German term used in graph theory, tree data structures, and genealogical diagrams to denote the node that serves as the direct parent of another node. The form Elternknotens is the genitive singular, used in phrases such as die Beziehung des Elternknotens or die Rolle des Elternknotens to indicate possession or attribution.

In rooted trees, every node except the root has exactly one Elternknoten, which establishes the parent-child relationship that defines the tree’s structure. The root node has no Elternknoten. A node with several descendants can be connected to multiple Kindknoten (child nodes), and through them to further generations, forming a hierarchical organization. The concept is fundamental for algorithms that traverse trees, compute paths, or aggregate information along ancestry.

In genealogical contexts, a person represented as a node may have an Elternknoten corresponding to their parent in the family tree. Here, the term helps describe lineage, inheritance of traits, or generation-based analyses. The parent-child relationship modeled by Elternknoten is directional: it points from parent to child, creating a hierarchy that supports operations such as depth calculation, subtree extraction, and ancestor lookup.

Variations and related terms include Knoten (node) in general, Kindknoten (child node), and Wurzel or Stammbaum for the tree’s root structure. While Elternknoten emphasizes the parental link, practical usage often focuses on the relationship between nodes rather than on the possessive form itself.
