Ellensúlyok, a Hungarian term, translates to "counterweights" in English. In engineering and physics, a counterweight is a weight or other load used to balance or counteract a force. This principle is applied in various mechanical systems to facilitate movement, maintain stability, or reduce the effort required to operate a device.

One of the most common applications of counterweights is in cranes. Large cranes utilize substantial counterweights at the rear of their boom to balance the heavy load being lifted at the front. This prevents the crane from tipping over and ensures stability during operation. Similarly, elevators employ counterweights that are attached to the car by cables. As the car ascends, the counterweight descends, and vice-versa, reducing the energy needed to move the car and its passengers.

The concept of the lever is fundamental to understanding how counterweights work. By strategically placing a counterweight at a greater distance from a pivot point than the load being counteracted, a smaller mass can effectively balance a larger one. This mechanical advantage is a core principle in many lever-based systems.

Beyond heavy machinery, counterweights are also found in simpler mechanisms. For instance, in some older window designs, sash weights are used to balance the sliding sashes, making them easier to open and close. In the realm of art and design, counterweights can be incorporated into kinetic sculptures to create graceful and balanced movements.
