The observed product distribution reflects the relative rates of these competing pathways.

The choice between elimination and substitution depends on several factors. Substrate structure is important: primary substrates tend to favor substitution (SN2), while tertiary substrates favor elimination (E1 or E2) under many conditions. The strength and nature of the nucleophile/base matter: strong bases promote elimination, especially in higher-temperature conditions, whereas good nucleophiles that are not strong bases tend to favor substitution. The leaving group quality and solvent polarity also influence the outcome: polar protic solvents stabilize carbocation-like intermediates and can promote substitution pathways (SN1, E1), while polar aprotic solvents tend to favor substitution via SN2. Temperature is a classic lever: higher temperatures generally shift the balance toward elimination.

Examples in practice include alkyl halides undergoing dehydrohalogenation or nucleophilic substitution. A primary halide with a strong nucleophile at moderate temperature tends toward substitution, whereas the same substrate at higher temperature or with a bulky base may yield elimination products. Tertiary substrates in protic solvents often display competing SN1/E1 versus E2 pathways, with temperature and solvent playing decisive roles.
