Elfdalian

Elfdalian is a North Germanic language spoken in Älvdalen, a municipality in the province of Dalarna, Sweden. It is considered one of the most conservative of the North Germanic languages, meaning it has retained many features of Old Norse that have been lost in other Scandinavian languages. For example, Elfdalian still distinguishes between the historically common and the historically rare genders, a feature largely lost in Swedish, Norwegian, and Danish. It also retains a complex system of noun declensions and verb conjugations.

Historically, Elfdalian was part of a larger dialect continuum in Dalarna, but over time, influences from standard Swedish led to a divergence. Today, it is primarily spoken by older generations in Älvdalen, though efforts are underway to preserve and revitalize the language. These efforts include language nests for children, teaching materials, and cultural events. Despite its status as a minority language, Elfdalian has a distinct cultural identity and is an important part of the heritage of the Älvdalen region.

The number of speakers is estimated to be in the low thousands, with a significant portion being elderly. Linguists have shown considerable interest in Elfdalian due to its linguistic conservatism and unique features. While not mutually intelligible with standard Swedish, it shares enough similarities for speakers of both languages to understand some of the basic communication, though fluency in one does not guarantee comprehension of the other. The language has a rich tradition of folk songs and stories.
