Elfdalian is a North Germanic language spoken in Älvdalen, a municipality in the province of Dalarna, Sweden. It is considered one of the most conservative of the North Germanic languages, meaning it has retained many features of Old Norse that have been lost in other Scandinavian languages. For example, Elfdalian still distinguishes between the historically common and the historically rare genders, a feature largely lost in Swedish, Norwegian, and Danish.
