Elektrolyyttielementteinä, also known as electrolyte-filled cells, are a type of battery that uses a liquid or gel electrolyte to facilitate the flow of ions between the anode and cathode. This design is commonly found in primary (non-rechargeable) batteries such as alkaline and zinc-carbon batteries. The electrolyte in these batteries is typically a solution of salts in water or a non-aqueous solvent. The most common electrolyte used in alkaline batteries is potassium hydroxide (KOH), while zinc-carbon batteries use ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) or zinc chloride (ZnCl2).

The operation of an electrolyte-filled cell involves the oxidation of the anode material, which releases electrons and ions into the electrolyte. These ions then migrate through the electrolyte to the cathode, where they are reduced, completing the electrical circuit. The electrolyte plays a crucial role in this process by providing a medium for ion transport and preventing the direct contact between the anode and cathode, which would otherwise cause a short circuit.

One of the advantages of electrolyte-filled cells is their relatively low cost and simplicity of manufacturing. However, they also have some limitations. The liquid electrolyte can leak over time, which can lead to corrosion and reduced performance. Additionally, the electrolyte can dry out or freeze in extreme temperatures, affecting the battery's functionality. Despite these drawbacks, electrolyte-filled cells remain a popular choice for many applications due to their reliability and affordability.
