Elektrofotografiske, or electrophotographic, refers to imaging techniques that create a visible image through the interaction of light, electricity, and pigment on a photoconductive surface. The process relies on charging a light-sensitive surface, exposing it to a pattern of light to form a latent electrostatic image, and then developing that image with charged toner particles before transferring and fixing it onto paper or other media. This approach distinguishes electrophotography from traditional chemical photographic development.

The concept originated in the early 20th century and was refined through the work of Chester Carlson in the 1930s. Commercialization followed in the 1950s with Xerox’s xerography, which popularized the use of dry toner and laser-based copying. Materials for the photoconductor evolved from selenium to zinc oxide and cadmium sulfide, and later to organic photoconductors, enabling higher speed and better efficiency. Modern electrophotographic devices include laser printers, photocopiers, and multifunction printers, as well as some imaging processes used in specialized industrial settings.

Core process steps include charging the photoconductor surface with a corona or charge roller, exposing it to light to create a latent image, developing the image with oppositely charged toner, transferring the toned image to paper, fusing or fixing it with heat and pressure, and cleaning residual toner from the surface. Toner typically comprises a polymer carrier with pigment and additives to control flow and adhesion.

Variations encompass different exposure technologies (laser or LED-based), as well as developmental and transfer methods used in various device platforms. Elektrofotografiske remains a foundational method in modern imaging, balancing speed, cost, and print quality while continuing to evolve through materials science and environmental improvements.
