Elektrofiliiseen

Elektrofiliiseen is a term that describes a substance or species that is attracted to or seeks out electrons. In the realm of chemistry, this attraction arises from an electron deficiency within the electrophile. Electrophiles are typically positively charged ions or molecules with a partial positive charge. They readily accept a pair of electrons from another species, known as a nucleophile, to form a covalent bond. This interaction is a fundamental process in many chemical reactions, particularly in organic chemistry, where it drives the formation of new carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds.

Common examples of electrophiles include positively charged ions like the hydronium ion (H3O+) or carbocations. Molecules with polar covalent bonds where one atom carries a significant partial positive charge, such as carbonyl carbons in aldehydes and ketones, also exhibit electrophilic character. Lewis acids, which are electron pair acceptors, are also considered electrophiles. The reactivity of an electrophile is determined by its electron deficiency; a greater deficiency generally leads to a stronger electrophile. Understanding electrophilic behavior is crucial for predicting reaction pathways and designing synthetic strategies in chemistry.
