Elektrochromiska refers to materials that change their color or opacity when an electrical voltage is applied. This phenomenon is driven by electrochemical reactions within the material, where the application of a voltage causes a change in the oxidation state of ions, which in turn alters the material's light absorption properties. These materials are often inorganic compounds, such as tungsten oxide, or organic polymers.

The key characteristic of elektrochromiska materials is their ability to maintain their state (colored or transparent) even after the voltage is removed, a property known as memory effect. This allows for energy-efficient operation in applications where the visual state needs to be maintained for extended periods.
