Elektrimootorist is a term often used colloquially in Estonian to refer to an electric motor. An electric motor is a device that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. This conversion is achieved through the interaction of magnetic fields and electric currents. Electric motors are fundamental components in a vast array of modern technologies, powering everything from small household appliances to large industrial machinery and vehicles.

The operation of most electric motors relies on the principle of electromagnetism. When an electric current flows through a conductor within a magnetic field, it experiences a force. In an electric motor, this force is harnessed to create rotational motion. Typically, a motor consists of a stator, which is the stationary part, and a rotor, which is the rotating part. The stator usually contains electromagnets or permanent magnets, while the rotor also has windings or magnets that interact with the stator's magnetic field, causing it to spin.

There are various types of electric motors, broadly categorized into direct current (DC) motors and alternating current (AC) motors. DC motors are powered by a direct current source and are often used in applications where variable speed control is important, such as in battery-powered devices. AC motors are powered by an alternating current supply and are commonly found in industrial settings and home appliances due to their robustness and efficiency. Further classifications exist, including brushed and brushless DC motors, and synchronous and asynchronous AC motors, each with specific advantages for different applications. The efficiency and power output of an electric motor depend on its design, size, and the quality of its components.
