Elatiivkäänne

Elatiivkäänne is an Estonian grammatical construction that involves placing the elative case of a noun at the beginning of a sentence to emphasize its content. This stylistic device is often used for poetic or rhetorical effect, drawing particular attention to the noun in question and its relationship to the rest of the sentence. The elative case, typically indicating movement out of, from, or cause/reason, takes on a heightened significance when moved to the initial position.

The typical word order in Estonian is subject-verb-object. However, the elatiivkäänne disrupts this by fronting the elative noun. For example, instead of a standard sentence like "Ma tulin linnast" (I came from the city), an elatiivkäänne might be "Linnast ma tulin" (From the city, I came). This rearrangement shifts the focus, making "from the city" the most prominent element, implying that the origin is particularly noteworthy or that the act of coming from the city is the main point.

While not a common everyday construction, the elatiivkäänne is a recognized feature of Estonian syntax, particularly found in literature and more formal or expressive speech.
