Ekjet

Ekjet is a coastal town and commune on the eastern shore of the main island of Valar in the archipelago of Valara. It has a population of roughly 8,500 and serves as a local hub for fishing, small-scale industry, and tourism. The waterfront features fish markets, a modest shipyard, and a protected harbor that supports regional vessels.

The name Ekjet derives from the Ekjeti language, commonly interpreted as meaning "edge of the sea" or "shoreline." The precise origin is debated, but the term reflects the community’s historical ties to seafaring and coastal resources.

Ekjet was settled in the 17th century by coastal families and grew with the development of the harbor in the 19th century. After independence, the town expanded its fish-processing capacity and road connections, shaping its modern economy.

Geographically, Ekjet lies in a sheltered bay bordered by mangroves and low hills. The climate is tropical, with a wet season from May to October and average temperatures ranging from 23 to 30 C.

The economy centers on fishing, fish processing, boat repair, and growing eco-tourism. Local authorities promote sustainable practices, including quotas, protected habitats, and community-based tourism initiatives.

Ekjet operates as a commune within Valara’s coastal district. It is governed by a mayor and a municipal council elected for four-year terms. The annual Ekjet Festival celebrates traditional music, dance, and crafts such as mat weaving and net making.

Education comprises two primary schools and a junior secondary school; higher education institutions are in the regional capital. The town is connected by road to the mainland and operates a regular ferry service to nearby islands.
