Einzelgabe

Einzelgabe is a term used in German-speaking education to denote the grade assigned to a single assessment component within a course, module, or examination. It is not a separate final grade by itself; rather it represents one element in the overall evaluation of a student’s performance. In modular curricula or examination regulations, students complete several components such as a written exam, a term paper, a presentation, and participation. Each component receives an Einzelgabe (also referred to as Einzelnote in some contexts). The final grade for the course or module—often called the Gesamt- oder Endnote—is typically calculated as a weighted or unweighted combination of these Einzelgaben according to the program’s rules.

Context and variation: The exact terminology varies by institution and country. Some institutions prefer terms such as Einzelnote, Teilleistung, or Teilnote instead of Einzelgabe. In some regions, Einzelgabe is more common in university regulations, while others simply list each component’s grade as a separate line or column.

Examples: A course might show: Klausur – 1,7; Hausarbeit – 1,3; Mitarbeit – 2,0. Endnote is calculated from these Einzelgaben. The Einzelgaben documentation helps identify individual strengths and weaknesses within the overall course performance.
