Eilihassoluissa

Eilihassoluissa is a small archipelago located in the high Arctic region of Finland, situated in the Lake Saimaa area at the northeastern end of the country. It is one of the many islands that make up the Saimaa lake system.

The islands of Eilihassoluissa are relatively small, with most of them being uninhabited and uninhabitable due to harsh climate conditions. However, some islands are inhabited primarily by ethnic Swedes who live there for part of the year. These islands offer a unique opportunity for studies in economic sociology.

The islands are sparsely populated due to the remote nature of the area and the seasonal changes in access to the islands. Hydroelectric power is used to supply the residents, though some residents also use alternative energy sources such as solar and wind power. The main occupations of the residents are fishing, hunting and gathering as the islands are largely forestry dominated and offer enough flora and fauna for hunting and gathering.

Eilihassoluissa archipelago has remained a largely isolated area, experiencing centuries of history of the seasonality of Swedish speaking population's changes with minimal external interaction, allowing for a unique socio-cultural identity shaped by this self-sufficiency nature. The language on the islands remains a blend of Swedish and Finnish dialects, reflecting the region's historical ownership disputes, reclaimed by Finland in 1921 following years of debate.

Despite their isolation, archaeological finds from the islands demonstrate that humans have been present in the region for thousands of years. Findings from the Neolithic and Pre-industrial Era illustrate a deep history of human settlement, although these remains remain largely unexplored and warrant more research.
