Eifinitejä

Eifinitejä is a recently described genus of small darkling beetles that was first reported from the boreal forest region of Finnish Lapland in 2021. The genus comprises three described species, all of which exhibit a distinctive faint greenish bioluminescence on the ventral side of their elytra, a feature that has attracted attention from both taxonomists and physicists studying natural light emission. The name Eifinitejä reflects the Finnish word “eini,” meaning “grey stone,” in reference to the beetles’ mottled coloration, and the plural suffix –täjä indicating multiple weavers of this hue.

In terms of classification, Eifinitejä belongs to the family Tenebrionidae, subfamily Pimeliinae, and is closely related to the genera Xylephaga and Pseudopiophila. Morphologically, members of the genus are 3 to 4 millimeters long, have thorax segments that are slightly convex, and possess antennae that are filiform with 11 segments. Their habitat preference is for moss‑laden, decaying wood in subarctic forest ecosystems, where they act as decomposers and as an occasional food source for cerambycid beetles and insectivorous birds.

The conservation status of Eifinitejä has not yet been formally assessed by the Red List, given the relatively recent discovery, but ongoing logging activity in northern Finland could threaten suitable habitat. Current research on this genus focuses on the biochemistry of its bioluminescence and its role in nutrient cycling in boreal ecosystems.
