Eginhart

Eginhart was an Anglo-Latin writer and theologian active during the late Old English period. Very little is known about his life, and his exact dates of birth and death are unknown.

Eginhart is thought to have been a member of a monastic community, possibly in the north of England, given the language and script used in his manuscripts. His works include a passional, known as the 'Passio Sancti Eadwoldi', and a collection of biblical exegesis, 'De Passionibus Antichristi'. The latter work is a unique commentary on the Passion of Christ, combining elements of patristic and medieval theology.

Eginhart's writings suggest that he was deeply influenced by the Church Fathers, particularly Gregory the Great, and the homilies of Aelfric of Eynham. His style is characterized by an austere, formal tone, and a focus on the intellectual and spiritual aspects of theology.

Manuscript evidence indicates that Eginhart's works were likely composed in the late 10th or early 11th centuries. However, there are no records of his participation in the translation movement or his reception within the larger literary or ecclesiastical landscape.
