Efflorescenceinduced refers to effects or conditions caused by efflorescence, the crystallization of soluble salts on the surface of porous materials. It is most commonly observed on masonry, concrete, brick, natural stone, plaster, and coatings where moisture movement carries salts to the exterior.

The process begins when water within the pores dissolves soluble salts from the material or from admixtures and surface treatments. As water migrates to the surface and evaporates, salts crystallize, forming white or gray deposits. Repeated wetting and drying can drive salts inwards or cause more pronounced crusts. The crystals can exert crystallization pressure, potentially contributing to small-scale spalling of mortars or coatings or to dark staining when impurities are present.

Efflorescenceinduced effects are typically cosmetic, but in some cases they indicate ongoing moisture ingress that can affect durability. Chloride- or sulfate-rich deposits can, over time, contribute to corrosion of embedded metal or to deterioration of lime-based or cementitious matrices. The appearance of efflorescence often accompanies dampness, musty odors, or mold growth.

Prevention and remediation focus on controlling moisture and optimizing material selection. Measures include improving drainage and ventilation, reducing water exposure, using low-soluble salts and breathable, vapor-permeable materials, and thorough cleaning of existing deposits. In construction, choosing appropriate mortar and grout mixes and proper detailing reduces the likelihood of efflorescence. Severe or persistent cases may require professional assessment to identify underlying moisture sources and assess structural risk.
