Effis

EFFIS, or the European Forest Fire Information System, is an information platform that provides near real-time and historical information about forest fires in Europe and neighboring regions. The system is designed to support prevention, preparedness, and response by fire authorities, policymakers, researchers, and the public.

EFFIS is developed and maintained by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) in collaboration with national fire services and other partners across EU member states and partner countries. It has operated as part of EU wildfire information efforts since the 1990s.

The platform combines satellite observations, ground reports, and official fire notifications to generate maps of active fires, burn extent, and historical fire events. It provides fire danger forecasts, weather-related fire risk indices, and risk maps updated daily during fire seasons. The system also hosts a historical archive and supports interoperability with national databases through standardized data formats.

The platform is publicly accessible through EU portals and is used by national authorities, emergency services, researchers, and NGOs. It supports situational awareness, planning, and analysis of wildfire regimes, climate change impacts, and land management policy.
