Effektinämuoto

Effektinämuoto is a proposed grammatical category in linguistic typology that encodes the resultant state produced by an event on a participating argument. Unlike tense, mood, aspect, or voice, effektinämuoto centers on the outcome of the action rather than its temporal framing or agentive relation. The term is Finnish in origin and appears in some discussions within Finnic-language linguistics and cross-linguistic typology as a way to describe how languages signal state changes.

Form and realization in theoretical accounts vary. In some analyses, effektinämuoto is described as a dedicated affix on the verb, a clitic, or a separate particle that marks the change of state. In others, it is treated as part of a broader resultative system that may interact with evidentiality, causation, or orientation of discourse. The exact morphosyntax is language-dependent, and no single universal realization is agreed upon.

Semantics and function. The core idea of effektinämuoto is to mark the outcome of an action—the new state of a participant after the event—independently of how the event occurred.
