Edgeinduced describes phenomena whose presence or magnitude is determined by the existence of an edge or boundary in a system. The term is used across disciplines to distinguish boundary effects from bulk properties.

In condensed matter physics, edge-induced effects arise when translational symmetry is broken at a boundary and can yield localized edge states. Topological materials host conducting edge channels; in graphene nanoribbons, zigzag edges support localized states. Edge-induced magnetism and edge superconductivity can appear in nanoscale structures where edge environments modify electronic interactions.

In optics, edge-induced localization creates edge modes in waveguides and photonic crystals, confining light along boundaries. In chemistry and materials science, edges and corners of nanoparticles show enhanced reactivity and selectivity due to undercoordination and higher surface energy.
