Ecolabelile

Ecolabelile is a global environmental labeling scheme designed to help consumers identify products and services with lower environmental impact throughout their life cycle. It sets criteria across product categories and requires independent verification to earn the label.

The scheme covers consumer goods such as textiles, electronics, and packaging, as well as services. Criteria address energy and water use, emissions, waste, sustainable sourcing, chemical safety, recyclability, and durability. It also considers labor and health aspects in supply chains.

Manufacturers submit an application with life-cycle data and undergo audits by accredited bodies. If compliant, products receive the Ecolabelile mark and must undergo regular re-certification.

Governance is provided by the Ecolabelile Council, a multistakeholder body of NGOs, industry groups, consumer organizations, and public authorities. Standards are reviewed periodically to reflect science, market feedback, and regulatory changes.

Reception is mixed: supporters cite transparency and reduced impact; critics warn of greenwashing and certification costs for small producers.
