The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) is an international alliance of public service media organizations. It serves as a forum for cooperation, advocacy, and the development of common technical and program standards across Europe and beyond. The EBU supports high-quality, independent public service broadcasting and aims to promote diversity, freedom of expression, and reliable information.

Founded in 1950, the EBU is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, with additional offices in Brussels for EU affairs. It represents around 115 member organizations from about 55 countries, along with associated partners. Members include national broadcasters and public service media groups that collaborate on programming, exchange content, and share expertise.

The EBU’s activities cover a broad range of areas. It coordinates cross-border program exchange and rights management, supports innovation in digital media, and develops technical standards and best practices used by its members. It operates services such as the Eurovision Song Contest and the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, as well as the Eurovision News Exchange, which enables rapid cross-border news sharing. The organization also provides training, research, and advisory services, and engages with policymakers on media regulation and public broadcasting funding.

Governance is conducted by a member Assembly, an Executive Board, and a Director-General or Chief Executive, with programs and services delivered through various commissions and working groups. Funding comes from member contributions, project revenues, and collaboration agreements.

Overall, the EBU plays a central role in coordinating and supporting public service media across Europe, fostering cooperation, innovation, and cultural exchange through shared standards, content, and initiatives.
