XMP metadata can be read and written by various software applications, making it a valuable tool for image organization and management.

While EXIF data is often embedded in a binary structure within the image file, XMP data can be stored in a dedicated section of the file or even in a separate sidecar file. Many modern image editing and management software applications support both EXIF and XMP standards, allowing users to view, edit, and add metadata to their photos. The integration of these standards facilitates better organization, searchability, and ownership tracking of digital images across different platforms and workflows.
