EUrajojen refers to the external borders of the European Union and to the policies and institutions that govern entry, stay, and transit across those borders. The concept covers land, sea, and air frontiers that separate the EU from non-member countries, as well as the border-control systems at points of entry. Within the Schengen Area, internal border checks are largely suspended, enabling free movement between most member states; external borders, by contrast, remain tightly controlled and represent the main interface between the EU and non-EU states.

Governance of EU borders is a shared responsibility of EU institutions and member states. The European Commission proposes rules on border checks, entry, asylum, and visa policy, and on cooperation with neighboring countries. The European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) coordinates patrols, rescue operations, surveillance, and joint operations, while individual member states carry out day-to-day border control at the external frontiers. EU-level instruments regulate asylum procedures and visa policies and set standards for border management and cooperation.

History and scope: The EU’s approach to borders evolved with enlargement and the creation of the Schengen Area. External borders were strengthened to manage migration flows and security while maintaining the right to asylum and fundamental rights. Responsibility for border management involves balancing security interests with mobility and humanitarian obligations, and policies are continually adapted in response to political priorities and external circumstances.

Current issues: Debates surrounding EU borders focus on asylum policy, irregular migration, human rights protections, border surveillance, and the effectiveness of cooperation with neighboring non-member countries.
