EUkansalaisten

EUkansalaisten is a Finnish term that can be used to refer to EU citizens. It is not an official designation; the standard Finnish term for people who hold citizenship of one or more EU member states is EU-kansalaiset. The form EUkansalaisten sometimes appears in commentary or in stylized references to the collective body of EU citizens, and may appear as a genitive or possessive form in texts that flex Finnish grammar to emphasize collective identity.

EU citizenship is conferred by member state nationality and provides a set of common rights across the Union. Key rights include freedom of movement and residence in any member state; the right to vote and stand as a candidate in European Parliament elections in the member state of residence; consular protection from other EU member states when outside the Union; and the right to petition the European Parliament and to access EU institutions in certain procedures. These rights supplement, but do not replace, national citizenship and depend on compliance with national laws and EU law.

Usage and debates: The term is often used in discussions about transnational mobility, democratic participation, and social rights within the EU. It can appear in analyses of how EU citizenship shapes everyday life, migration, and civic engagement. Some sources prefer the neutral form EU-kansalaiset to avoid confusion with a specific group.
