EUNIS2

EUNIS2 is a collaborative initiative within the European University Information Systems (EUNIS) community that provides a standardized data model and software platform to support the collection, exchange, and analysis of higher education information across European institutions. It aims to complement national and institutional information systems by enabling interoperability and sector-wide reporting.

Development and scope: EUNIS2 builds on the earlier EUNIS framework and covers core administrative data such as institutions, faculties, programs, courses, students, staff, enrollments, and finances, as well as research outputs and student mobility. The project defines a reference data model, controlled vocabularies, and a data exchange layer with APIs and common data formats to facilitate cross-border sharing while respecting data governance requirements.

Architecture and features: The platform emphasizes modularity and openness, with a central registry of data definitions, data quality checks, versioning, and API-driven interfaces for data providers and consumers. It supports privacy-by-design and security measures appropriate for education data.

Governance and participation: Managed by the EUNIS Association with representation from member countries. Working groups handle data modelling, interoperability, governance, and security. Institutions can participate through national coordinators or direct membership, subject to policy rules.

Impact and applications: EUNIS2 aims to support benchmarking, policy analysis, and cross-border collaboration by providing harmonized data for dashboards and statistics. National agencies and universities use it to feed national statistics and European-level indicators.

Standards and relation: Aligns with European qualifications and educational standards such as ISCED, EQF, and ECTS, fostering compatibility with other European data initiatives.
