EUHabitat

EUHabitat is a European Union initiative aimed at preserving and enhancing the natural environment, particularly habitats and species. It is part of the EU's broader environmental policy framework, which includes the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2030. The initiative focuses on protecting and restoring habitats and species across the EU, with a particular emphasis on those listed in the EU Habitats Directive and the EU Birds Directive.

The EU Habitats Directive, adopted in 1992, aims to protect and restore habitats and species of community interest. It establishes a network of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and Special Protection Areas (SPAs) across the EU. The EU Birds Directive, adopted in 1979, has a similar aim but focuses specifically on bird species.

EUHabitat supports the implementation of these directives by providing funding and technical assistance to member states. It also promotes the development of habitat and species management plans, and encourages the use of innovative and sustainable management practices.

The initiative is overseen by the European Commission, with input from the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union. It is funded through the EU's financial framework, with contributions from member states and the European Regional Development Fund.
