EPUBtiedostot are digital book files that use the EPUB (Electronic Publication) file format. This format is an open standard designed for digital publications, making it widely compatible across various e-readers, tablets, smartphones, and computers. The EPUB format is essentially a ZIP archive containing HTML, CSS, and JavaScript files, along with images and other resources needed to display the book's content. This structure allows for reflowable text, meaning the text can adapt to different screen sizes and user preferences, such as font size and line spacing.

The EPUB format was developed by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF), now part of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Its primary goal is to provide a flexible and accessible format for digital books, promoting interoperability between different devices and software. Unlike fixed-layout formats, EPUB's reflowable nature makes it ideal for novels and other text-heavy content. However, fixed-layout EPUBs also exist, which are better suited for visually rich publications like children's books or technical manuals where precise layout is crucial.

EPUBtiedostot can be read using a variety of software applications and dedicated e-reader devices. Popular e-reader software includes Adobe Digital Editions, Calibre, and built-in readers on devices like the Amazon Kindle (though Kindle primarily uses its own format, it can convert EPUBs) and Kobo e-readers. The widespread adoption of the EPUB format has made it a standard choice for ebook publishers and distributors worldwide, facilitating the sharing and reading of digital literature.
