EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. An EGR system is a pollution control device that reduces nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from gasoline and diesel engines. Nitrogen oxides are formed at high temperatures when nitrogen and oxygen in the air react. By recirculating a portion of the exhaust gas back into the engine's intake manifold, the EGR system lowers combustion temperatures. The exhaust gas is inert and does not contain oxygen, so when mixed with the incoming air-fuel mixture, it displaces some of the oxygen and absorbs heat, thereby reducing the peak combustion temperature.
