Dzungars

The Dzungars were a confederation of Oirat Mongol tribes who emerged in the 17th century in what is now Xinjiang, China. Their homeland was primarily the Dzungarian Basin, a fertile region in northwestern China. The Dzungars rose to prominence under leaders like Galdan Boshughtu Khan, who unified the various Oirat tribes and established a formidable military force.

Their state, often referred to as the Dzungar Khanate, was a significant power in Central Asia for over a century. They engaged in frequent conflicts with the Qing Dynasty of China, as well as with other regional powers like the Kazakhs and the Russian Empire. The Dzungars were known for their skilled cavalry and their adoption of gunpowder technology. Their military campaigns extended their influence across a vast territory.

The Dzungar Khanate eventually faced internal strife and external pressure. The Qing Dynasty, under Emperor Qianlong, launched a series of campaigns against the Dzungars in the mid-18th century. These campaigns were brutal and led to the collapse of the Dzungar state. The aftermath saw widespread devastation and a significant decline in the Dzungar population. The legacy of the Dzungars is a complex one, marked by their military prowess and their role in the geopolitical landscape of Central Asia during a crucial period of history.
