It is commonly used in the production of high-performance magnets, particularly in the form of dysprosium-cobalt and neodymium-iron-boron alloys, which enhance the coercivity and thermal stability of these materials. These magnets are critical components in various high-tech industries, including electric vehicles, wind turbines, and advanced electronics.

The element was discovered in 1886 by the French chemist Paul-Émile Lecoq de Boisbaudran, who isolated it from the mineral xenotime. Dysprosium is relatively scarce in the Earth's crust, with an estimated abundance of about 5.2 parts per million. Due to its scarcity and the complexity of its extraction and purification processes, dysprosium is often sourced from large-scale mining operations in countries such as China, which dominates global production.
