Duris

Duris was an ancient Greek vase painter and potter. He was active in Athens during the late Archaic and early Classical periods, roughly from 500 to 460 BCE. Duris is considered one of the most important masters of the red-figure technique, a style of pottery decoration where the figures are reserved in red against a black background.

His works are characterized by a distinctive style. Figures are often depicted with fine, elegant musculature, delicate facial features, and a sense of movement and vitality. Duris frequently depicted scenes from mythology, athletic contests, symposia (drinking parties), and everyday life. He is known for his ability to portray emotion and narrative with great skill.

The signature "Duris made me" or "Duris painted me" appears on many vases, indicating his prominent status as both artist and craftsman. His workshop was prolific, and his influence can be seen in the work of many other Athenian potters and painters. Surviving examples of Duris's work are found in major museum collections worldwide, offering valuable insights into ancient Greek art, culture, and social practices.
