Duplexultraäänikuvaus, often referred to as duplex ultrasound, is a medical imaging technique that combines two distinct ultrasound modalities to provide a more comprehensive view of blood flow and tissue structure. The first component, B-mode ultrasound, generates a two-dimensional anatomical image of the blood vessels and surrounding tissues. This allows clinicians to visualize the size, shape, and wall structure of the vessel. The second component, Doppler ultrasound, measures the velocity and direction of blood flow within the vessels.

The duplex ultrasound system integrates these two types of information simultaneously. The B-mode image displays the anatomical context, while color-coded Doppler signals overlay the image to indicate the presence, direction, and relative speed of blood flow. Red typically represents flow towards the transducer, while blue indicates flow away from it. Variations in hue and brightness can also denote different flow velocities. Spectral Doppler, a more detailed form of Doppler ultrasound, can also be used in conjunction with B-mode to analyze the waveform of blood flow, providing further diagnostic information about potential blockages or abnormalities.

This technique is non-invasive and does not involve ionizing radiation, making it a safe and widely used diagnostic tool. Duplex ultrasound is particularly valuable in assessing vascular conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), carotid artery stenosis, peripheral artery disease, and aneurysms. It aids in diagnosis, guides treatment decisions, and monitors the effectiveness of interventions. The interpretation of duplex ultrasound images requires specialized training and expertise.
