Dunmeri

Dunmeri refers to the Dunmer, the Dark Elves, a race of elves native to the province of Morrowind in Tamriel. They are characterized by ash-gray skin, bright red or amber eyes, and a long lifespan. The Dunmeri homeland centers on Morrowind, particularly the volcanic island of Vvardenfell, though Dunmeri communities exist across Tamriel. Their native language is Dunmeris, a member of the Aldmer language family; many Dunmeri also speak Imperial or other regional languages depending on settlement.

Society and culture in Dunmeri communities are organized around Great Houses, several powerful noble families that control politics, land, and commerce. The principal houses include Indoril, Redoran, Hlaalu, Telvanni, and Dres. Each house upholds its own codes of conduct, but shared values include loyalty to one’s family, a strong sense of honor, and pragmatism in dealing with outsiders. Ancestor reverence is a central cultural element, with family tombs and ancestral spirits shaping decisions and identity. Dress, tattooing, and body art are prominent features in many Dunmeri communities, reflecting clan and house affiliations.

Religion and belief in Dunmeri culture have long been shaped by the Tribunal Temple, which venerates the Three Living Gods Almalexia, Vivec, and Sotha Sil. Ancestor worship also remains important, and various Dunmeri factions incorporate Daedric rites or other spiritual practices alongside temple devotion. The interplay of house politics, temple authority, and ancestor lore drives much of Dunmeri daily life, law, and diplomacy, both within Morrowind and in broader Tamriel.
