Dunfyllda

Dunfyllda is a fictional village and municipality in the northern highlands of the realm of Eldoria, a country used in world-building exercises. The settlement forms part of the county of Vetril and is surrounded by pine forests, peat bogs, and a string of limestone outcrops. The name is of uncertain origin, first attested in handwritten chronicles from the 13th century in a form similar to Dunfyllda.

Geography: Situated along the Dun River at an altitude of about 350 meters, the area features a small lake to the east and a cool temperate climate with significant precipitation. The landscape blends woodland, agricultural terraces, and scattered farmsteads.

History: The region shows evidence of early agricultural activity, with a medieval manor at Dunby acting as a local seat. Development slowed in later centuries but revived in the 19th century through timber production and small-scale quarrying. After World War II, the community shifted toward conservation and tourism, preserving many historic structures.

Economy: Historically dependent on timber, quarrying, and peat extraction, Dunfyllda today centers on tourism, local crafts, and seasonal farming. Infrastructure is limited, with a single two-lane road connecting to the regional network and the nearest rail link located some distance away, limiting heavy industry.

Demographics and culture: The population is imagined to be around 1,800 to 2,200 in contemporary fictional counts. The community speaks a regional Eldorian dialect, with cultural life organized around small-scale festivals and traditions. Notable features include Dunfyllda Chapel, a wooden church dating to the 18th century, and Dunfell Hill, a local geographic landmark.
