Duetten

Duetten, or duets, denote musical performances or compositions designed for two performers. The term derives from the Italian duetto, meaning a small duet, and is used in several languages (for example German Duett/Duette). A duet can involve two singers, two instrumentalists, or any two-part interaction in which both parts are performed together and usually share equal prominence.

Forms and characteristics: In vocal duets, lines may be sung in harmony, in call-and-response, or in interweaving melodies; instrumental duets often feature interlocking parts or partner textures. Notation typically uses two staves labeled for each part or a single staff with two voices. Duets occur in opera, chamber music, art song, and popular music, serving dramatic, expressive, or conversational purposes and often highlighting interaction between two characters or ideas.

History and usage: Two-voice textures appear early in polyphony, but the modern concept of a duet solidified in the Baroque and matured through the Classical and Romantic periods in opera, song, and chamber music. The repertoire expanded in the 20th century and beyond, including cross-genre collaborations in film, theatre, and pop.

Notable examples: Vocal duets include Là ci darem la mano from Mozart’s Don Giovanni; O soave fanciulla from Puccini’s La Bohème; Au fond du temple saint from Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers; Sull’aria from The Marriage of Figaro; and The Flower Duet from Delibes’s Lakmé. In popular and musical theatre, Tonight from West Side Story is a landmark example, with other contemporary duets such as Endless Love and Shallow illustrating cross-genre usage.
