D-segmenttejä, or large family cars, are a category in the European car size taxonomy. D-segmentti roughly describes vehicles about 4.5 to 4.9 meters in length, positioned between the compact C-segment and the executive E-segment. The term is used in most of Europe, including Finland, and many models are offered as sedan and estate/wagon bodies, with some markets also offering hatchback variants of comparable size. The emphasis is on interior space, trunk capacity, and ride comfort.

Powertrains in this segment vary from turbocharged petrol and diesel to hybrid and plug-in options. Transmission choices include manuals and automatics, with front-wheel drive as standard and all-wheel drive available on several models. D-segment cars typically feature higher equipment levels than smaller segments, including advanced safety systems, driver assistance, roomy interiors, and upscale materials.

Historically, D-segment models formed the backbone of European mid-size cars, with long-running nameplates such as Volkswagen Passat, Ford Mondeo, Opel Insignia, Skoda Superb, and Peugeot 508. The segment attracted fleets and family buyers for its balance of space and comfort. In recent years, sales have shifted toward SUVs, but traditional D-segment sedans and estates remain common in many markets, particularly where estates are prized for luggage capacity.

In practice, the D-segment encompasses not only traditional sedans and estates but also modern five-door models and crossover-styled cars that meet the same size class by wheelbase and length. The category continues to influence design and perception in European automotive markets, even as consumer preferences evolve.
