Druckfestigkeit, often translated as compressive strength, is a fundamental material property that describes a substance's ability to withstand loads that tend to compress or shorten it. It quantifies the maximum compressive stress a material can endure before it fails, typically by crushing or buckling. This property is crucial in many engineering and construction applications where materials are subjected to significant forces pushing them together.

Different materials exhibit vastly different druckfestigkeit. For instance, concrete, widely used in buildings and infrastructure, possesses high compressive strength, making it ideal for foundations and load-bearing walls. Metals like steel also have considerable druckfestigkeit, allowing them to be shaped into structural components that withstand immense pressure. Conversely, materials like foam or rubber have very low druckfestigkeit and are not suitable for applications requiring substantial compression resistance.

The measurement of druckfestigkeit is typically determined through standardized laboratory tests. A sample of the material is subjected to increasing compressive force until it deforms permanently or fractures.
