Dramaturgens

Dramaturgens are theatre professionals who practice dramaturgy, the study and development of dramatic texts and performances. Working in theatres, festivals, or as independent consultants, they serve as a bridge between research and production, helping to define context, interpretation, and audience experience for a given work.

Core tasks include researching historical, literary, and cultural contexts; analyzing scripts to identify themes, structure, and staging possibilities; advising on translations, adaptations, cuts, or reworkings; drafting program notes and production dossiers; supporting new play development and commissioning; and facilitating communication among playwrights, directors, designers, and actors. Dramaturgens may also curate season concepts and prepare educational materials for students and general audiences; during rehearsals they may provide ongoing dramaturgical input or coordinate post-show discussions.

In institutions, dramaturgs may hold titles such as resident dramaturg, associate dramaturg, or literary manager. Some operate as project-based dramaturgs for festivals or touring productions. In opera and musical theatre, dramaturgs collaborate with librettists and composers to align text with music and staging. While the term originated in German theatre in the 18th–19th centuries, the modern role has become common across many countries, with duties that vary by organization and tradition.

Typical background includes theatre studies, literature, history, or languages, plus training in research methods, critical analysis, and collaborative work. Strong writing and communication skills are essential, as are a capacity for interdisciplinary interpretation and audience-facing work.
