It emphasizes audience immersion and empathetic engagement over detached observation, often by foregrounding subjective perspective and sensory detail.

The term is of Dutch origin, formed from door (through) and leeft (lives). It began appearing in Dutch academic writing in the early 2010s and has since circulated in international discussions of immersive storytelling. While closely related to general notions of experiential storytelling, doorleeft specifically highlights the audience’s sense of participating in or reliving events.

In practice, doorleeft can be applied across media. In literature, it may involve first-person narration, interior monologue, and rich sensory description that invite interior repetition of events. In film and theater, it relies on point-of-view choices, sound design, and staging that create immediacy and proximity to the action. In interactive media and games, it uses branching narratives, player agency, and affective design to heighten the feeling of reliving outcomes and consequences. Documentary and journalism may employ survivor testimonies, archival reconstruction, and carefully crafted narration to evoke a lived experience without dominating interpretation.

Critics note that doorleeft risks overpowering critical distance or manipulating emotions if overused, while supporters argue it strengthens ethical engagement and memory work. The concept remains a topic of debate in discussions of authenticity, consent, and the responsibilities of storytellers.
