Domestikasjon

Domestikasjon, also known as neoteny or domestication, is a process where certain species of animals are bred or reared in a human-controlled environment, resulting in selective changes to their behavior, physiology, or both. This phenomenon has occurred in various species, including mammals, birds, and even fish.

Through domestication, humans have been able to adapt species to suit their needs for companionship, labor, or food sources. One of the earliest recorded examples of domestication is the dog (Canis lupus familiaris), which originated from the gray wolf around 15,000 years ago. Since then, humans have selectively bred many other species for desirable traits, such as docility, smaller size, or specific coat colors.

Domestication can be categorized into two main types: behavioral and physiological. Behavioral domestication involves changes in an animal's behavior, such as reduced aggression or increased tameness. Physiological domestication, on the other hand, involves changes in an animal's physical characteristics, such as increased size, smaller brain-to-body mass ratios, or altered coat colors.

Examples of domesticated species include cattle, pigs, sheep, horses, and chickens, which are raised for meat and dairy products. Other species, like dogs, cats, and birds, are kept as companions or working animals. Domestication has not only benefited humans but also allowed various species to adapt to new environments and thrive.
