Domaingeometry

Domaingeometry is the study of the geometric properties of domains—open connected subsets of a metric space, most often the Euclidean plane or complex plane. The focus is on how the shape and boundary of a domain influence geometric and analytic quantities defined on it, such as intrinsic metrics, curvature effects, and boundary regularity.

The subject overlaps with complex analysis, potential theory, and metric geometry. Core concerns include the geometry of a domain's boundary, boundary regularity, isoperimetric and isocapacitary inequalities, and how domain shape governs metrics like the Euclidean, hyperbolic, or Kobayashi metrics. It also studies how domains transform under conformal or quasiconformal maps and how domain deformations affect harmonic measure, Green's functions, and capacity.

Tools and methods come from geometric function theory, partial differential equations, and geometric measure theory. A central theme is how geometric constraints control analytic behavior, such as bounds on harmonic measure or gradient estimates for solutions of Laplace's equation. Common objects of study are standard domains (disks, half-planes, polygons) and more irregular domains with fractal or rough boundaries. Techniques emphasize the interaction between geometry and analysis, including the role of boundary regularity and domain shape in governing analytic quantities.

Domaingeometry has applications in physics and engineering where domain shapes influence physical fields, such as electrostatics, fluid flow, and material science, as well as in pure mathematics where it informs conformal mapping, Teichmüller theory, and numerical methods for domain decomposition. While not always named as a discrete subfield, the study is closely related to geometric function theory and domain theory, and the term is sometimes used in literature to describe investigations that center on the interplay between a domain's geometry and its analytic or metric properties.
