Djurmigration

Djurmigration is the seasonal or periodic movement of animal populations between habitats, typically driven by resource availability, breeding needs, and environmental cues. The term, derived from "djur" meaning animal and "migration," covers movements across land, freshwater, and marine environments and includes both long-distance journeys and more localized shifts within landscapes.

Movements are shaped by factors such as seasonal changes in food and water, climate and weather patterns, reproductive timing, predation risk, and human-induced changes to habitat. Animals may migrate to exploit temporarily productive areas, reach favorable climates, or access mates. Barriers such as highways, dams, and urban development can constrain routes, while habitat fragmentation can alter timing and routes.

Common patterns include migratory flyways used by birds, herds moving between seasonal grazing grounds, and marine animals following productive currents or prey migrations. Movements may be annual, multi-year, or irregular, and may involve different routes across generations. Some species show facultative migration, moving only when conditions require.

Researchers study djurmigration using tracking devices such as GPS collars or satellite tags, observational surveys, genetic analyses, and climate data integration. Citizen science and historical records also contribute. Understanding migration helps identify critical habitats, migration corridors, and times of heightened vulnerability to threats such as habitat loss, climate change, and overharvesting.
