In RAFT, dithioesters act as chain transfer agents, reversibly capping the growing polymer chain. This reversible capping process effectively controls the concentration of active radicals, leading to polymers with narrow molecular weight distributions and predictable architectures. The dithioester mediates the equilibrium between dormant and active polymer chains, allowing for controlled chain growth.

Beyond polymerization, dithioesters can also participate in other organic transformations.
