Disøkonomier, also known as diseconomies of scale, represent the opposite of economies of scale. They occur when a company or organization grows so large that its average cost per unit of output begins to increase, rather than decrease. This phenomenon suggests that there is an optimal size for a firm beyond which further expansion becomes inefficient.

Several factors can contribute to diseconomies of scale. One significant factor is communication breakdown. As organizations grow, the number of employees and departments increases, leading to more complex communication channels. This can result in misunderstandings, delays, and inefficiencies. Coordination problems also arise; managing a larger workforce and more intricate operations becomes more challenging, potentially leading to slower decision-making and reduced productivity.

Another common cause is a lack of motivation or alienation among employees. In very large organizations, individual workers may feel disconnected from the company's overall goals or their own contribution may seem insignificant. This can lead to decreased morale, reduced effort, and higher employee turnover. Bureaucracy can also become a significant issue, with excessive rules, procedures, and layers of management slowing down processes and adding to costs. Finally, logistical challenges, such as managing a larger supply chain or distributing products over a wider area, can become more expensive and complex, further contributing to rising average costs.
