Dissolvent

A dissolvent, or solvent, is a substance, typically a liquid, capable of dissolving a solute to form a solution. It provides the medium in which solute particles are dispersed at the molecular or ionic level. The choice of dissolvent depends on the solute’s properties and the intended use. Dissolvents are commonly categorized as polar protic (water, alcohols), polar aprotic (acetone, dimethylformamide), and nonpolar (hexane, toluene). Water dissolves many ionic and polar compounds; organic solvents are used for nonpolar or organic solutes. Solubility arises from intermolecular interactions such as hydrogen bonding, dipole interactions, and dispersion forces, and it is affected by temperature, pressure, and other solutes. The rule of thumb “like dissolves like” captures a key trend: polar solvents favor polar solutes, nonpolar solvents favor nonpolar solutes.

Dissolvents have diverse applications: laboratory analysis and synthesis, extraction and purification, formulation of pharmaceuticals, paints, and cleaning products, and various industrial processes. In chromatography, the dissolvent (mobile phase) affects separation by influencing solubility and migration. Important properties guiding selection include polarity, boiling point, volatility, toxicity, and environmental impact. In practice, solvents with high volatility are easier to remove; those with lower toxicity and environmental footprint are preferred where possible.

Safety and environmental concerns are central: many dissolvents are flammable and toxic; vapors pose inhalation risks, and improper disposal can harm ecosystems. Proper handling, ventilation, and waste management are essential. Note: in many contexts, “solvent” is the standard term, with dissolvent used as a synonym or historical variant.
